This week my teaser is from State of Wonder by Ann Patchett:
A black vulture the size of a turkey walked down the aisles like all the other shoppers, looking for whatever fish heads and entails were to be had underneath the tables. The bloody scraps were hard to find.

This teaser made me laugh. And then I thought what it would be like to see a vulture in ther middle of a grocery store aisle...that's scary! I've never seen a vulture up close but I think there not very nice birds plus they're able to carry off small dogs in their beaks I think!
This teaser makes me even more curious about this book!
wow. yes, this does, indeed, make one curious. Sounds like an interesting book.
I actually knew someone who had vultures at one point (they had raised a nest of them-- 3 or 4 of them, I think. I spoke with this person years later). The vultures would follow the family around town (they lived in a small town), and were even known to sit on the movie theater and wait for the kids to come out and fly over their heads as they walked home. They said the best scene was the time that the vultures were sitting on this arch, watching as a funeral procession went by!
I enjoyed State of Wonder for the most part, but I actually wound up being a little bit let down by it. It was good, but not as GREAT as I had hoped. Guess I had my expectations pretty high for that one! I hope you enjoy it!
Amy: Don't worry! Vultures are scavengers, not predators! Small dogs are safe from them! (Eagles and owls are a different story. You often hear of them carrying off small dogs down here!)
