Book Club Picks for 2010/2011

I know that many of you meet on a calendar year basis, but since our group first formed in the Fall we have just been following the school year. Over the last couple of months we have been busy finalizing our reading schedule for the next year and here is what we have come up with:

Home in Carolina by Sheryll Woods  (We actually won copies of this book for our whole group from Bookmovement.com)
Things I've Been Silent About by Nazar Afisi
The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent
The Good Husband of Zebra Drive by Alexander McCall Smith
Comfort and Joy by Kristin Hannah
Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas
Nefertiti by Michelle Moran
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Shaffer and Annie Barrows
They Almost Always Come Home by Cynthia Ruchti
The Help by Kathryn Stockett

This schedule allows us a break in the summer to get caught up on our personal reading.  We have a tradition of getting together in the summer and having a dinner and movie night.  We usually have a potluck with just appetizers and in the past have watched a movie of a book we have read.  This year we couldn't decide on a movie from what we read so we ended up watching My Life in Ruins, and we all loved it!  So we had a great night of food, friends and fun!

When we meet in September we will be beginning our 7th year together and I'm very excited to read these books with my group.  The only book on this list that I have read is Prayers for Sale and I know the ladies are going to love it!  Have you read any of these yourself?

What a great list! The only book on the list I've read is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

Sounds like a great list and book club. I've not read any of them although I've read some Alexander McCall Smith. I also have Guersney on my nightstand, on the recommendation of a friend.

Neither of my book clubs choose a whole year of books at one time. We like to be able to include a new book, author or recommendation, if something interesting comes out. Is there a reason you choose for an entire year? Can you change titles if something "better" comes out?

Please know that I am not judging... I am just curious. Please email me if you want to. Thanks!

Bermuda: I'm so glad that one of our ladies picked Guernsey because I've been really wanting to read that one!

Kathy: We are very flexible with our reading schedule and have been known to make changes...usually when we win books for the entire group.

This looks like a great selection! My book club usually plans a couple of months ahead because we're so indecisive. :)

I recognize a few selections (Gurnsey book & The Help) -- great choices that I have been meaning to read.

Looks like you have great year ahead of you!

I haven't read any of these, but several of them are on my TBR shelf just waiting to get picked up!

I have read the Guernsey book, The Help, and Nefertiti. All very good! I see quite a few titles on there that I would love to read! That's a great assortment for a book club.

Alyce: We started out picking a few months at a time, but now almost everyone makes a selection so it fills up quickly!

Julie: A bunch of these have been on my TBR list also so this is a great way to make sure I finally read them!

Luanne: I've had The Heretic's Daughter for over a year on my shelf at home, but have been waiting to read it hoping my book club would want to read it ...and surprise!

DCMetro, Beth, and Jess: I've heard nothing but good reviews for both The Help and Guernsey so I am definitely looking forward to these also!
