Wondrous Words Wednesday-Feb. 11

Bermudaonion has started a new meme that asks you to share new words that you have learned during your reading adventures in the last week. I thought this would be a good one for me to get involved in because quite often when I come across a word I don't know, I just blow it off and keep reading. Hopefully this will help me become more attentive.

I found the following word last week as I was reading The Triumph of Deborah:

Aggrandize:
1.to widen in scope; increase in size or intensity; enlarge; extend.
2.to make great or greater in power, wealth, rank, or honor.
3.to make (something) appear greater.

I am also having a contest for this book that you can check out here.

What kind of new words have you found lately?

Thanks for playing along. Since grand was in aggrandize, I thought it might mean something like that.

Great idea for a meme :)

I still remember that my favorite edition of "Black Beauty" had definitions and little dictionary-type entries in the margins to explain the words and horse-y terms.

I think I've seen that word before, but just guessed by the context. I love this meme. I feel like I'm actually learning something.

I'm having fun, stopping by all the WWW blogs and finding new words! Does this count in my writing time? Yes, it must.

Kathy: Oh it's fun, and makes me pay attention to the words I don't know! Next time I will add the sentence that I found the word in.

Texas: I remember books like that too! I remember entries like that in Pride and Prejudice and Anna Karenina. They were very helpful!

Carol: Thanks for stopping by--It is good to feel like we are learning since that should be a continual lifelong experience as far as I'm concerned.

Karen: Thank you for stopping by today also and I think it absolutely counts for writing time for you!

I haven't participated in this meme yet, but as soon as I find some good words I will.

I have never heard of aggrandize before either. I agree this is a fun meme to play and good for us. Thanks for coming by and checking out my new words.
